Testing them is your job, and it takes a minute
Safety switches are mechanical devices and they can fail. Pressing the test button quarterly is the recommended habit: the switch should trip immediately. If it does not, it is not protecting anything and needs attention.
Do it at a time when losing power briefly is not a problem, and be aware it will reset clocks and interrupt anything running.
Smoke alarms usually come up at the same time
The same property transactions that trigger RCD checks generally trigger smoke alarm requirements too, and in most cases that means mains powered alarms rather than battery units. It is worth handling both in one visit rather than discovering the second requirement after the first job is done. Hardwired smoke alarms are a small job when someone is already on site.
